Guatemala: Huehuetenango Finca La Bolsa
Guatemala: Huehuetenango Finca La Bolsa
Finca La Bolsa is located in the town of La Libertad, Huehuetenango. It's one of a few plots of coffee that sprung up around the original farm, El Rincon, started by Dr. Jorge Vides. He bought this original piece of land back in the mid-1950's, planting the in Bourbon and Caturra, the cultivars that were available at that time. The farm has spread out to include three plots of coffee in total. He's since handed the reigns over to his daughter, Maria Elena Vides, who now manages the day to day, along with the help of her son, Renardo. Finca La Bolsa is mostly planted in Bourbon and Caturra, with Maragogype, the large-sized coffee bean, that is harvested separately. This lot is certified Rain Forest Alliance ("RFA"), a certification program that verifies measures are being met to maintain sustainable agricultural practices (maintaining natural forest and biodiversity, minimal soil inputs, targeted pest control, etc), as well as sustainable work conditions in terms of fair compensation for labor, gender equity, and more.
